How to Choose a Watch: Water Resistance, Strap & Style

A watch does not only tell the time — it also says who you are. But beyond looks, there are practical things you should know before you buy, so the watch lasts you for years. In this guide we explain simply what to look for.

1. Water Resistance: What ATM Really Means

This is where most mistakes happen. Water resistance is measured in ATM (or bar) and does Not indicate diving depth — it indicates resistance to pressure. The practical rule:

  • 3 ATM: It withstands accidental contact with water — drops, rain, washing hands. Not suitable for swimming. Do not go into the sea with a 3 ATM watch.
  • 5 ATM: Suitable for everyday wear and for swimming in a pool or the sea.
  • 10 ATM: Suitable for swimming and more intense use in the sea.

Practical tip: If you want a watch for summer and the sea, start from 5 ATM and up. If it is a 'city' watch that will not get wet, 3 ATM is perfectly fine.

2. Strap: A Material That Fits Your Life

The strap determines how comfortable and durable the watch is day to day:

  • Steel (bracelet): Durable, elegant, ideal for both formal and everyday looks. It is not afraid of water.
  • Leather: Warm and classic, it elevates any outfit — but keep it away from too much water and sweat.
  • Silicone / rubber: Sporty and practical, ideal for an active life and the sea.

3. Case Size: Proportion to the Wrist

A watch should 'sit' correctly:

  • Slim wrist: A 34–40 mm case looks proportionate.
  • Wide wrist: A 42–46 mm case balances better.

Too large a case on a slim wrist looks excessive; too small on a wide wrist gets lost.

4. Men's or Women's — and What Changes

The main difference is the case size and the design, not some strict rule. Many models are unisex. See:

5. A Branded Watch = Guarantee & Value

At Skyros Jewellery we select watches from recognised international houses. A branded watch means:

  • A movement and materials of proven quality.
  • Guarantee and authenticity.
  • It retains its value over time.
